What I’ve wondered lately

I went to a friend’s house recently and he had several canning jars on the counter.

One had pickled beets.  Another okra.  And then there was just pickles.

Why are they called pickles?  Why aren’t they called pickled cucumbers?  Anyone?

  1. I’ve pickled a ton of cucumbers in my day, but have no clue why they aren’t referred to as “pickled cucumbers.” Maybe it’s because there are so many different ways to pickle a cucumber. It’s easier to call it by it’s processed name such as sweet pickles, dill pickles, bread & butter pickles, sweet relish, etc. 🙂

  2. Maybe so people will write posts about them? What I wonder is why there was a law against eating pickles at noon on Sundays in New Jersey. Or why Connecticut deemed that a pickle is not a pickle if it doesn’t bounce. 🙂
