I love Ahi Sushi. I first tried it in Hawaii back in 2008 while on vacation. I remember my husband offering it up to me and I was like, “Um…raw TUNA?!” But he did make it a romantic week, so I gave him the benefit of the doubt and tried it.
I’ve been hooked ever since. (Pun intended. 🙂 )
Anyway, since going Gluten-Free the hardest thing I’ve had to face is giving up the comfort foods. You know those delicacies that help you celebrate good news and at the same time make the bad days bearable.
Believe it or not, one of the first things I had to cut from my diet was sushi. And for the saddest reason you can imagine…the soy sauce. Nothing says, “Yum,” quite like Ahi dipped in a little bit of wasabi and soy!
But the brand-named companies automatically add wheat to their soy sauce. Well, not all but unfortunately, the sauce usually served in restaurants contains gluten.
Recently, I discovered Kikkoman has started marketing a gluten-free brand of soy sauce in my area. I swear I did a little dance right in the middle of Wegman’s grocery store when I found it.
For a while, if I knew I was going to eat out, I carried it with me to the restaurant. (Make sure when you pick it up, you look for the BLUE label.)
But last week, after a harrowing day of car shopping (I love to shop for anything but cars or houses) my husband treated me to sushi. Just one problem, I hadn’t planned on dining out. No worries. He’d already checked. When we sat down he asked the server for gluten-free soy sauce. She came back with it and some Ahi…just for me!
Ah…comfort food. Who says being gluten-free means you have to give up what you love? Not me, anymore! 🙂
